Blue Cross NC Foundation Backs CPS Mental Health
Efforts for Youth

Center for Prevention Services (CPS) has received a three-year, $393,000 grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation to expand culturally tailored youth mental health programs for Latino youth and families in Charlotte. The grant will support five CPS programs focused on mental wellness, stigma reduction, and substance use prevention, reaching over 800 youth and parents. This funding is part of a broader Blue Cross NC Foundation initiative to improve youth mental health access across North Carolina through community-based, non-clinical support.

Meet the New Faces at CPS

Lori Burney, Director of Development

Hi, I am Lori! As a lifelong advocate for emotional and behavioral health services, I am honored to be part of the amazing CPS team! I began my professional career in the fast-paced, competitive world of advertising and have over 20 years of experience in marketing, fundraising, and nonprofit leadership. After earning a Master of Public Administration from Clemson University, I founded Integrity Leadership Services and have spent the last decade providing charitable organizations and minority-owned businesses with coaching, training, and project support with a primary focus on fund development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I developed The Building Blocks of Mental Fitness©, a model designed to teach and promote emotional regulation and to reduce the mental health stigma. In my role with CPS, I enjoy cultivating relationships and collaborating with community partners on initiatives that lead to collective impact and improve the lives of the people we serve.

Logan Weidenhammer, Executive Assistant

Hi! I'm Logan, the new executive assistant here at CPS. I'm originally from Monroe, NC, and studied Psychology at UNC Charlotte before earning a master’s in software development and UX design. I’ve worked as an EMT for Mecklenburg County and later as a software developer in UNCC’s bioinformatics labs, but what drives me most is making a real impact on people’s lives.

I’m excited to be part of such a thoughtful and welcoming team. Right now, I'm exploring different areas and considering pursuing an MSW/LCSW in the future. Outside of work, I’m a musician (classically trained on oboe, now into voice and drums), an avid writer and cartoonist, and a big fan of VR gaming. I’m really grateful for the chance to contribute and learn from everyone here!

Overdose Emergency Kits in the Community

Queen City Harm Reduction has launched an important new initiative, placing overdose emergency kits in public spaces across our community. Because in an emergency, every second counts.

Each kit includes:

  • Narcan (naloxone) nasal spray

  • Fentanyl test strips

  • Quick-start instructions for rapid response

This project is all about saving lives, increasing access, and making sure support is never out of reach. Keep an eye out for a kit near you and help spread the word!

Alianza On the Move

This month, Alianza coalition leaders have been out and about in East Charlotte, hitting the streets to connect with our neighbors, share information about our programs, and invite more folks to get involved in the movement!

If you spot our table in your neighborhood, don’t be a stranger! Stop by, say hi, and learn how you can be part of building a stronger, more connected community.

Unity in the Community Resource Fair

This past weekend, we participated in the Unity in the Community Resource Fair at Eastway Regional Recreation Center, hosted by Carolinas CARE Partnership. We had a great turnout—distributing 12 lockboxes and 20 Deterra pouches, while also sharing information about our youth and family programs. We connected with several local organizations, including UNC Charlotte’s Center for Wellness Promotion. Thanks to everyone who stopped by!
